How Infinite Banking Can Redefine Your Financial Future
by Nate Dean
If you've spent any time around traditional finance, you've probably heard phrases like "financial security" and "retirement savings." Sounds good, right? But here's the catch: these phrases are like invisible handcuffs designed to keep us doing exactly what's expected—working hard, paying taxes, and hoping everything somehow magically works out at retirement.
At the core, what sent me and Brandon (Co-Founder of ULC) on this journey, was our shared awakening to a powerful shift known as the Infinite Banking Concept, made famous by Nelson Nash in his landmark book Becoming Your Own Banker. But before you think it's about complicated financial maneuvers, let’s simplify it: Infinite Banking is about putting your money to work—over and over again.
Imagine you walk into a convenience store with a dollar, buy a candy bar, and walk out happy. But then, imagine your buddy walks in with the exact same dollar and comes out not just with a candy bar, but also a Coke and a bag of chips. Clearly, he knew something you didn't. That's Infinite Banking at its simplest—making your dollars do more than one job, simultaneously, to create multiple streams of value.
Rethinking "Financial Security"
We were all taught the same traditional path: get a solid education, land a good job, contribute diligently to your 401k, and retire comfortably. The harsh reality? Most people reach retirement with far less than expected. The math just doesn't add up. Fidelity’s own statistics show the average 401k for a baby boomer irs around $200,000. It's obvious something's broken in that line of thinking.
Think about it: financial institutions, corporations, and the government all have a vested interest in keeping your money tied up as long as possible, only giving it back slowly, in minimal amounts. They want consistent, systematic contributions—your 401k deductions prove that. The real kicker is realizing that your "retirement savings" aren't truly savings—they're investments, subject to risk, and sometimes heavy risk.
The False Hope of Conventional Wisdom
Here's the truth most people won't tell you: hope is not a financial strategy. Your retirement savings aren't savings unless they're sitting entirely in cash. If they're invested, you're playing the game of risk and hope. But hope won't guarantee you a secure retirement.
Real security is about knowing precisely what your money is doing for you, not hoping it does something good. It’s about building a foundation strong enough that even when things don’t go according to plan, you’re not left financially crippled.
Certainty vs. Risk: You Can Have Both
Most financial advice associates certainty with minimal returns and risk with high rewards. Yet, the reality is, you can create certainty without chasing risky ventures. Infinite Banking helps you achieve exactly that—by shifting control back into your hands.
Our friend and co-host of our podcast Cashflow Legendz, Brock Fortner, puts it perfectly: “Everybody needs a bit of risk, but we have tremendous control over that risk when we're clear about what we want.” Financial certainty doesn't mean avoiding risk entirely; it means intelligently positioning yourself so you have clear, predictable outcomes.
When you plug the leaks in your financial bucket first, you can then decide where and how you invest, not out of desperation, but out of strategic, enlightened decision-making. As I say often says, "someone is always going to control the banking function in your life—why shouldn't it be you?"
The Foundation of Your Financial Life
Ultimately, Infinite Banking is about much more than just money. It's about building a financial foundation rooted in certainty, efficiency, and empowerment. It’s investing in yourself first, controlling the banking function in your life, and reducing unnecessary risk so your future isn’t left to chance.
